Located in the eastern quadrant of the Eastern Alberta Trade Corridor, the City of Lloydminster holds a place of economic distinction as the ‘Heavy oil Capital of the World.’ Heavy oil production has been an economic driver of the Lloydminster region for decades. The history of oil and gas in this area goes back to the arrival of the Barr Colonists in the late 1800s. Today, Lloydminster remains the home of Husky Energy’s Canadian heavy oil operations with an asphalt refinery, ethanol plant and the Lloydminster Upgrader.

Agriculture industry has been and continues to be a cornerstone of our region’s economy. Wheat, barley and canola typically account for more than 30 per cent of the total acreage sown in the Lloydminster area. Lloydminster is home to one of Canada’s largest canola crushing facilities and Canada’s largest bio-diesel plant, making it a value-added destination for the agriculture and oil industries.
